The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. has issued cease and desist orders for some banks in NC and Colorado. Cape Fear Bank, became the 22nd US bank to fail and the first in North Carolina. FDIC’s Deposit Insurance Fund would have to spend $131 million in view of the Cape Fear Bank failure and some other takeover deals. Also, the New Frontier Bank of Greeley, was closed on Friday by the Colorado State Bank Commissioner, four months after FDIC issued orders against it. FDIC officials took over the New Frontier Bank of Greeley and renamed it as Deposit Insurance National Bank of Greeley.
ASEAN Cancelled Under Pressure

The ASEAN Summit supposed to be held in Pattaya, was cancelled after protestors stormed the venue. The protestors support former Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra and have stated that the current government is illegitimate and hence cannot sign any agreement for the country. Thai government has declared emergency and evacuated the visiting dignitaries. The Pattaya Summit was supposed to be the meeting place for ASEAN members with leaders of Australia, India, China, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea. Protestors dispersed after the Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, left the venue. UN Secretary General, Ban-Ki-Moon, released a statement, expressing hope that normalcy would be restored soon. He was one of the leaders expected to attend the Summit.

The UK police arrested about 12 people earlier this week, on charges of terrorism. The arrested, included Pakistani students in the UK Police seem to have little evidence to support the arrests. It appears as though it would become an immigration issue as valid passports have not been recovered from the arrested persons. This has resulted in counter-blaming by Pakistani and UK officials, regarding immigration and visa issues. The recent arrests, nicknamed “Operation Pathway”, were revealed by the Metropolitan Police Service counter-terrorism chief, Bob Quick. As the operation has run into rough weather, the police official who disclosed it has quit.

Military head Frank Bainimarama has been reappointed as Prime Minister by the President, Mr.Ratu Josefa Iloilo. On Thursday, a Fijian court ruled against military government. This led Mr. Bainimarama to resign from the top post. On Friday, President Iloilo appointed himself as head of state and removed the judges. He also declared emergency and reappointed the Prime Minister, ensuring that the military still retained power. United Nations Secretary General has deplored the military rule and has called for restoration of a legitimate government in Fiji. The United States has asked Fiji to return to democracy. The Pacific Islands Forum leaders have asked Fijian government to hold elections as soon as possible.
